The Crestwood Hills Community Garden Project!

Get your GREEN thumbs ready! There is growing interest in the neighborhood regarding the creation of a community garden on Crestwood Hills Association land. At our annual meeting in May there was an interesting presentation from Farmscape Gardens where the logistics of installing, maintaining and farming a neighborhood garden were discussed. Water, sunlight, pests, location and accessibility are all major topics that need to be addressed before we can move forward. We would like to invite everyone who is interested in participating to meet at the Clubhouse on Feb, 11 2012 @ 11:00 AM. We will brainstorm ideas, take suggestions, and get a feel for the overall level of interest in the project from the community. Looking forward to seeing you there!

In accordance with the Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (CC+Rs) established by the original developers of Crestwood Hills, which apply to present property owners, any proposed change to the outside of the house must be submitted to the Crestwood Hills Architectural Committee for approval prior to commencement of work, and no changes may be made until the Committee approves the plans.  This applies to anything visible from the outside including (but not limited to) landscaping, fences, roofs, painting, additions, and remodeling.

FROM THE ARCHIVES:

Actor Fritz Feld was responsible for  organizing the entertainment at the open-air theatre at the park that is now aptly named the Fritz Feld Theatre.  His wife, Virginia Christine was also an actress (some of us may be old enough to remember Mrs. Olsen on the Folger Coffee TV commercials; this was one of the minor parts Virginia played).  The following is an introduction by Virginia for an event held in the park early in 1972:

Good evening- I’m Mrs. Frtiz Feld – It seems to me somewhere in the marriage vows, something was said about ‘SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE’.  I assume this must have included responsibilities, so I’m here tonight to fill in for the chairman of the Crestwood Hills Entertainment Committee who happens to be my husband.  Fritzie is shooting a film on location in Santa Barbara and sincerely regrets he cannot be here.  He asked me to welcome you to a fun evening in our little outdoor theatre.
Tonight we bring you a special treat – THE CETA PLAYERS.  CETA stands for comprehensive employment and training act.  The City has employed these actors and in so doing helped to remedy the severe unemployment situation in the theatrical profession.  The Board of Directors of the CHA invited these players and I might mention that all expenses have been paid by the Association.  So as long as you are paying your dues, we can look forward to more attractions in the future.  You are all invited for coffee, tea and cookies after the performance.  A very special thanks to Maurice Kurtz of the Board for his assistance in procuring lights for tonight.
I take great pleasure in introducing to you the man who is in charge of all the CETA players in our City, the well-known character actor whom you have seen and enjoyed so many times: Mr. Anthony Caruso – Incidentally behave yourselves tonight because Tony is also our honorary mayor of Brentwood.

I. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 8:10 pm byKyle Kozloff.

II. Minutes

Minutes from the December 14, 2011 meeting were approved as distributed online.

III. Treasurer’s Report. Rob reported on our current finances. As noted below there has been a decline in dues because the Views have not been mailed to the community.

IV. Old Business.

A. The Regberg Memorial  was discussed.

B. Robert Plotowski reported on discussions with the Nursery school about installing tiles on the exterior of the school for fund raising. Some members of the board were concerned about changing the original architectural look and exterior structure of the building. The board asks the school to explore alternatives that do not lead to permanent changes in the original building.

V. New Business

A.  Alex reported on progress on vastly improving our website and creating a Crestwood Hills Twitter account. Among the issues was whether a Crestwood Hills Tweet would be seen as an authoritative statement from the board. Ways of dealing with this were discussed. 

B. Delays in mailing the dues has led to a situation where members in the community have not received requests and envelopes for paying annual dues. There was extensive discussion about to how best remedy this for the future  and about how best to disseminate the Views in the future.

C. The possibility of limiting parking on one side of Hanley especially around curves was discussed.

VI. Committe Reports.

A. Archives. The board approved spending money to digitize the original architectural plans for the committee.

B. Robert reported on the tree committee.

C. The architectural committee submitted a report to the board.

VII. Comment

A. Eddy Swink stated a desire to try to improve the process of architectural approval in the community.

II. Minutes

Minutes from the November 16th meeting were distributed and approved.

III. Treasurer’s Report. Rob reported on current membership and finances. We have 119 paid members which is below where we have been at this time of the year in the past

IV. Old Business.

A. Kyle obtained photos of some possible benches for a memorial to Scott Regberg in upper Crestwood Park. There was extensive discussion as to what would constitute the best memorial for Scott.

B. Community Garden. Alex will include something about plans for the garden in the views.There was extensive discussion about how to include the community and the school in working with the garden.

C. A potential replacement for Hagy was supposed to come to the meeting, but was unable to because of health issues in his family.

D. Cory reported on examination of the archive room. She requested more file cabinets. The current method of storing rolled up drawings in PVC pipe cannot be sustained. The board discussed trying to digitize the plans. A major difficulty is the size of the drawings.

V. New Business

A.  Ara will attend the next BCC meeting on January 3rd. Kathy will attend the February meeting. Cece will attend the March meeting. Alex will attend the April meeting. Cece will attend the May meeting. Robert will attend the June meeting.

B. There have been 2 burglaries on Kenter recently.

C. There was extensive discussion about the Views, including publishing it on the web.

V. New Business

Eddy Swink from 1336 N. Tigertail attended the meeting as a community member. He asked where in the bylaws he could determine what we are allowed to do with our community property. He is concerned about plans to develop the bowl that arise periodically since it is adjacent to his back yard. He was concerned that people clearing brush there was throwing combustible cuttings in the canyon,  and that they have destroyed two burrowing owl habitats. He said that the workers have also stolen prickly pear fruit from trees in his yard. He requested a map of the community showing what property is owned by the association.  Extensive discussion. followed.

II. Minutes

The minutes from the July 28th meeting were approved as submitted online.

III. Treasurer’s Report. Rob reported that the association has 116 members, and described our current financial situation. The board discussed the possibility of collecting dues on a calendar year basis.

IV. Old Business.

A. Kyle and Cece will walk the upper park with the LA Parks foundation to discuss the scope of the Scott Regberg memorial.

B. Thursday August 25th will be the day for work in the archives, starting at 10.

C. Alex updated us on FarmScape, the possibility of having a community garden in theAssociation’s land on upper Tigertail.

D. The board noted the potentially dangerous traffic congestion on Hanley, especially if a fire occurred, and discussed the possibility of asking that parking be banned on one side of dangerous curves.

E. Rob provided an update of the rental situation with the nursery school.

V. New Business

A.  The board will invite representatives from the nursery school to attend the October board meeting.

B. The board set September 25th as the date for our annual Softball game.

III. Treasurer’s Report. Rob reported on membership dues received since the annual meeting..

IV. Old Business.

A. Kyle reported on an ongoing conversation with residents who live across from the Park who said that their property had been damaged by a land slide from the park.

B Brush clearance was discussed.

V. Election of officers. The board elected the following officers:

B Vice President: Cece Karz.

C Secretary: Chuck Goodwin.

D Treasurer: Robert Plotkowski

VI. New Business

A.  Cory discussed a request from a community member for a copy of one of the original Crestwood Hills photos.

B.  The plaque honoring Scott Regberg is now in the park. The board discussed placing a memorial in the upper park as well.

C.  On Thursday, August 25th board members and community members are invited to work in the community archives.

D.  Cory reported on the Brentwood Community Council meeting.

E.  The board discussed the necessity of having story poles when additions are planned.

F. Kathy Leader and Kristin Kozlowski will serve as the welcoming committee.

G. Robert Plotowski briefly noted several issues to be discussed at the next meeting.

H Alex MacDowell discussed creating a community garden.

I.    Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:39 pm by Kyle Kozloff. Present were residents who have lived in the community for over 50 years.
II. The board members were introduced.
III. Treasurer’s Report. Robert Plotkowski reported that we are in the black for the second year in a row.
IV. Year in Review
a. Emergency Preparedness. Fire is a significant risk. We have done brush clearance. It would be very good to set up links of emergency contacts in the community.
b. CHA Website. We are improving the CHA Website. It would help to have updated email addresses, etc. so that communication within the community can be improved.
c. Archives. We have wonderful pictures dating back to the founding of the community, which were projected after the meeting.
d. CH Nursery School. Cece Karz has been in close contact with the nursery school.
e. Trees and Architecture. These committees are crucial to the community.
f. Community Events. Our softball game was very successful.
g. In Memoriam. The community suffered a real loss when Scott Regberg, former president of the board died suddenly last summer. Dr. Gerald H. Levin, Hans Baerwald and a number of other residents died during the year.2.
V. Guest Presentation — Farmscape. Alex MacDowell introduced Rachel from Farmscape who talked to the community about organic gardens.
VI. Election of Board Members. Hagy Belzberg, Ara Kermanikian, Kyle Kozloff, Robert Plotkowski and Eric Reed were elected to the board.
VII. Announcements. A mountain lion has been sighted several times in on the fire road above Kenter, and appears to have killed deer on Tigertail.
Charles, who staffs the park, was introduced.
VIII. Public Comment. A number of suggestions, such as getting a list of preferred trees, were made from the floor. One resident objected to residents having their gardeners cut neighbor’s trees to improve views.  Dwarf trees that will not grow tall are now available.
IX. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 7:23.

Few neighborhoods have gotten underway with grander plans than Crestwood Hills. Imagine a place where hardworking musicians, teachers, and writers can live together, close to the city yet surrounded by nature, with cooperatively owned schools, stores, medical services — and even a bus to take them to their jobs in Los Angeles.

Such was the dream. And some of it came true.

“It was very exciting, I have to say,” says Nora Weckler, who joined the Mutual Housing Association, which in the late 1940s developed the site in the then-remote Santa Monica Mountains high above Sunset Boulevard.
