The Crestwood Hills Association annual meeting was held June 1 at the newly open Crestwood Hills Park clubhouse. The park and clubhouse are now open part time but will closed again sometime after the summer to complete renovations. It will reopen permanently after that.

Treasurer, Randy Fred reported that the community is financially solvent. We have approximately 160 members but should have close to 200.

Bruce Judhen, who lives adjacent to Crestwood Hills, and is on the board of the Brentwood Homeowner’s Association, reported on the great amount of continuing construction in the neighborhood. He has put together a report on construction impacts summarizing issues such as the hours when construction work is permitted. how long dumpsters can be parked on the street, etc.

CHA president, Kyle Kozloff encouraged people to fill out a brief survey about their wishes for the community during the meeting.

New board members Jennie Prebor and Emese Wood were elected to board for 2 year terms along with returning board members, Allison Baratelli, Cory Buckner, Charles Goodwin, Kathy Leader,
Departing members of the board, Rand Fred and Christopher Wargin were warmly thanked for their service to the community.

The risk of wildfire in Mandeville Canyon is a reality. Fire Officials are particularly concerned given the drought conditions over the past year. We have just completed one of the driest “rainy” seasons on record, with only 3.21 inches of rain — almost a foot below the normal level. As a result, “fire season” has begun early, as indicated by the large brush fires in Griffith Park and Catalina Island, as well as smaller fires in Los Feliz and Beverly Hills. Some firefighters, with many years of experience, have noted with concern that the hills are drier than they have ever seen. We can expect that conditions will worsen with extreme heat, low humidity and dry winds.

12361 demolition 03
Today one of the original Crestwood Hills Association homes was demolished. It was an 111x model by architects Whitney R. Smith and A. Quincy Jones located at 12361 Deerbrook Lane. This was one of the 33 remaining intact homes of CHA.

In just nine days seven original CHA homes will be open for the MAK architecture tour, celebrating the architecture here in our community. It is a shame to lose one of the original homes.

“Good houses get demolished all the time because of ignorance, and it’s true across the board. But with A. Quincy Jones it’s truer than with most because many architects believe he was under-recognized”
Kimberli Meyer, director of the MAK Center

Ellen Pine Sengelmann, who lived on upper Kenter for 12 years, passed away on Tuesday, November 21 in a fire that destroyed her home. It is believed that the source of the fire was an automobile in the garage below her bedroom and that Ellen and her two dogs died in their sleep of smoke inhalation.
A retired nurse, Ellen was a funny and kind neighbor, mother and grandmother who always had a friendly smile and a nice word for all she encountered. She will be missed and the Crestwood Hills community extends its condolences to her entire family for their loss.  — Rob P.

2006 CHA Softball Game
In what should prove to be a highly anticipated annual event, the North of the Park Bluebirds beat the South of the Park Orange Crush by a score of 5-3.
2006 Champions Bluebirds

The Orange Crush, clearly attempting to make the game more interesting, deferred most of their scoring chances until the last inning but fell short on a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.
Great fun was had by all, with thanks going to Allison Baratelli for spearheading and organizing the event.
